How can a brand be made future proof?

The only thing in life for sure is tomorrow will always be different, and just as the natural environment is forever in a state of evolutionary flux so to is the business and consumer environment. Fortunately, although this may seem an entirely unpredictable environment there are certain immutable rules that govern nature and these can be applied to the business environment. To some extent, therefore, it is possible with thorough research and experience for a brand to be made adaptable enough to face the future and survive.

The skill in branding is to understand and predict the evolutionary market place in which it exists. Many factors can cause changes in a brand's market and these such as:

  • Political change
  • Demographic changes
  • Social change
  • Legislation

Additionally, a brand can be affected by changes within the parent company such as:

  • Company mergers and acquisitions
  • Company restructuring
  • Brand reorganisation

Futurology attempts to predict the nature of a market place by using research techniques and experience, taking into account many of the above factors. It is of course an inexact science and there have been many occasions when a decision that flies in the face of the respect wisdom, a pure hunch, has been spot on.
